Increased Number of Cases of Monkeypox (MFOX) in Korea Without a History of Overseas Visits
The Cheongdae Times Senior reporter So-Yeon Kim
Health authorities are nervous as a monkeypox virus patient was confirmed in Korea on April 7, 23.
According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the sixth confirmed patient was suspected of having MFOX symptoms, and after three days of genetic testing, it was confirmed that he was infected with MFOX.
As a result of an epidemiological investigation, the sixth confirmed patient was identified as a confirmed patient without visiting overseas.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that there was close contact with a person believed to be the source of infection in Korea within three weeks before the first symptom occurred.
In addition, the 7th to 8th confirmed cases are coming out one after another. The 7th confirmed patient was suspected of symptoms on the 10th and was confirmed positive as a result of a genetic test. The confirmed patient had close contact in Korea about three weeks before the symptoms occurred.
The 8th confirmed patient is a Korean who visited the public health center on his own due to chills and skin lesions on the 11th. As a result of a genetic test, it was confirmed positive and became the 8th confirmed patient. The health authorities confirmed that there was close contact in Korea within three weeks before the first symptoms occurred, and are conducting epidemiological investigations on the source of infection and contacts.
Meanwhile, on the afternoon of the 12th, an additional confirmed patient of MFOX was confirmed, bringing the total number to 9.
The 9th confirmed patient visited a medical institution due to skin lesions on the 12th, and the medical institution reported MFOX infection to the local public health center, and genetic tests confirmed that it was positive.
The ninth patient is also presumed to be infected in Korea as he has no overseas travel history within three weeks before the first symptom occurs and close contact in Korea has been confirmed.
Due to the recent increase in domestic MPOX patients, the crisis alert level was raised from "attention" to "caution" on the 13th.
Mfox is a disease called monkeypox. It is mainly transmitted through close contact such as skin contact or sexual contact, and symptoms appear five to 21 days after infection (incubation period).
Major symptoms include fever, headache, chills, and blistering rash similar to chickenpox on the body or hand. Symptoms last for two to four weeks and mostly recover naturally. The fatality rate of MFOX, which is currently in vogue, is known to be 0.13% and the severity is less than 1%.

In order to prevent MPOX, it is important to avoid contact with suspected patients. In addition, it is recommended to follow infection prevention rules such as washing hands and not touch mucous membranes such as eyes, nose, and mouth.
If you have traveled to a country where MPOX occurred, you should be careful not to contact people around you if you have suspicious symptoms such as fever, chills, and blistering rash within three weeks of returning home. |
